Living Cells Used In Type 1 Diabetes

advertisement

Have you ever heard of the reasearch using living cells to reduce and even cure type 1 diabetes? Since type 1 diabetes is considered a chronic disease you must live with forever, who pays any attention to a cure. Lets see what this living cell research is all about.

This research has taken place in New Zealand. The company is called LCT (living cell technologies) and the product is called Diabecell. This development has taken place as of April, 07, 2010.

What they did was take insulin producing cells from a pig and inject them into humans with type 1 diabetes. Because the cells of a pig blend in with a humans system, it’s thought that these insulin cells would reproduce what a diabetic couldn’t.

The Test

Since 2007 some 30 odd patients have been on this product and two have been off insulin injections without any relapse. The others have been able to reduce their medications with improving results.

Granted this isn’t a large scale test yet, but it seems they are headed in the right direction. What wasn’t known is how often this transfusion took place and what quanities had to be givien.

What this does give people with diabetes is hope. The notion that maybe someday they can start moving back in the direction of a normal life. If research like this is not taking place in the United States, then the question is why not? Transplants of animals organs such as a heart has taken place in the past and now you don’t hear of it anymore.

Of course you can’t run out and do this procedure based on 30 some trials, but science most certainly is in a position to consider the possibilities that a procedure like this has merit.

Until such a discovery is approved we still have natural means to manage diabetes. You have the old standby like diet and exercise to help you balance your body, Spices like cinnamon have mixed reviews, but yet are widely promoted by homeopathic doctors as a supplement for diabetes sufferers.

There’s still a lot you can do with what we know, but keep you eyes open for what’s to come for this health care issue.
